Farmers Market opens May 6

This growing season, the LaRue County Farmers Market will be on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 2- 5:30 p.m. The market is held at the Extension Service parking area at 807 Old Elizabethtown Road. Opening day is May 6. The market will continue through the summer until Labor Day weekend.
The market will carry a variety from local producers such as: fruits and vegetables, bedding plants, flowers, honey and locally raised beef. For updates on what the market features each week, look for LaRue County Farmers Market on Facebook. The new USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines focus on weight management and encourage Americans to increase physical activity and to make lower-calorie food choices. Locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables will always be your best choice for optimum nutrition and food safety.
Other guideline tips are:
* Enjoy your food, but eat less.
* Avoid oversized portions.
* Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
* Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1 percent) milk.
* Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals - and choose the foods with lower numbers.
* Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
