 FFA emblems

Southern States is supporting the National FFA Organization by selling FFA emblems for $1. The campaign ends March 24. After you buy an emblem, you can sign your name on it or the name of a child you care about. The emblems will be displayed in the store. Proceeds are split between the local FFA chapter, the state FFA association and the National FFA Foundation.

 

Goat and sheep meeting

The LaRue County Goat and Sheep Producers will meet 6:30 p.m. March 13 at the LaRue County Extension office. The program will be a video on “Hay for Small Ruminants.” The group will discuss plans for Extension Expo and initial planning for County Fair Goat and Sheep Shows. A meal is planned. 

 

LaRue County Pork Producers meet

The LaRue County Pork Association will meet 7 p.m. March 17 at the LaRue County Extension office. All interested individuals are invited to attend.

 

Grain meeting

The Hardin/LaRue County Grain meeting will be 10 a.m. March 18 at the Hardin County Extension office, 201 Peterson Dr., Elizabethtown. Dr. Carrie Knott, UK grain crops specialist will discuss grain crops updates and the agronomics of cutting costs. Dr. Greg Halich, UK agriculture economics specialist will discuss dealing with profitability challenges. Lunch will be provided; RSVP to Hardin County Extension at 270-765-4121, or LaRue County Extension, 270-358-3401 by Monday, March 17.

 

CLASS: How to grow blueberries

A “how to grow blueberries” class, part of the Gardner’s Toolbox Series, will be 6 p.m. March 19 at Hardin County Extension Service, 201 Peterson Dr., Elizabethtown. Learn if you have the right soil to grow your own berries; cost is $5. For more information, call 270-765-4121.

 

CLASS: How to Grow Cabbage, Broccoli and Cauliflower

A “how to grow cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower” class, part of the Gardener’s Toolbox Series, will be 6 p.m. March 25 at Hardin County Extension Service, 201 Peterson Dr., Elizabethtown. Learn all about the three biggest cole crops. Cost is $5. For more information, call 270-765-4121.

 

FREE CLASS: Tips for Growing and Using Herbs

A free “tips for growing and using herbs” class will be 5 p.m. April 3 at the LaRue County Extension office. Instructor is Cathy Taylor. For more information, call 270-358-3401.

 

Thistle spraying of demonstration plots – April 7

Kentucky Department of Agriculture personnel will be in LaRue County on April 7 to spray demonstration plots (grass pasture fields) for thistle control. Up to seven farmers may participate. The state will provide a sprayer and chemical to spray 10 acres for free (farmer must provide tractor and driver) and 10 more acres if the farmer has purchased additional 2,4-D. Call the Extension Office for more information, or to make a request for spraying thistles. 

 

No-till drills

The LaRue County Conservation District has three no-till drills available for rent. For more information, call 270-358-3132. The office is located in the LaRue County Farm Bureau Building, 606 N. Lincoln Blvd., Hodgenville.

 

Dead animal pickup

For dead animal pickup, call Bluegrass Recycling at 888-744-1186. The cost is $87.50 and the LaRue County Conservation District will reimburse the landowner with receipt. For more information, call the Conservation District office at 270-358-3132.
