State Fair entry deadlines loom
The deadlines for entries to the 2010 Kentucky State Fair are near. The Fair will be Aug. 19-29, but entry deadlines are as follows. Open livestock entries must be postmarked by July 10. Open Show livestock may actually enter after July 10 by paying a double entry fee, but no open livestock entries will be accepted after July 24. Open show Poultry and Pigeon entries must be postmarked by July 10 and Rabbit entries by July 17. Most entries can be made online at the Kentucky State Fair website www.kystatefair.org. Entries for all other departments are due July 1 but late entries will be accepted with an increased entry fee, but they must arrive at the Fair Office by July 10.
The Premium List and General Rules can also be viewed by Exhibitors Department; entry forms can be obtained at www.kystatefair.org.
Home canning vegetables
During the growing season, the Extension Service will show DVD segments demonstrating how-to techniques on home canning and freezing during farmers market hours. Drop in any time between 2 and 5:30 p.m. or call Abby Tate at 358-3401 if you want to view the DVD at other times.
FSA loans are eligible in federal disaster areas
Farmers in 90 counties, including LaRue County, are eligible for federal disaster assistance including low interest emergency loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency provided eligibility requirements are met.
On May 28, President Obama declared LaRue County a disaster area due to damages by severe storms and flooding that occurred May 1.
EM loan applications for physical and production losses will be received through Jan. 24, 2011, and applications pending on that date may be processed and completed. Farmers interested in applying for assistance should contact their local FSA county office at 765-2702.
The U.S. Farm Service Agency is accepting nominations of farmers and ranchers for county committees. Nominations must be postmarked or received in a local U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center by Aug. 2. FSA will mail ballots to eligible voters on Nov. 5. Ballots will be due back to the county office by Dec. 6. Newly elected committee members and alternates will take office Jan. 1, 2011. Dead animal pick-up reimbursement
If you have a dead animal that needs to be removed from your land, call Griffin Industries (1-800-452-3092) or DAR, Inc. (1-888-744-1186). Then take your receipt to the LaRue County Conservation District, 606A N. Lincoln Blvd., Hodgenville, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and qualified producers will be reimbursed 75 percent of the receipt. This offer is retroactive to July 1, 2009.
