Don't miss your blessing from God's word

Availability of Bible does not diminish its rare value

By George Smith

Bibles are found everywhere and yet, millions of people miss the blessings of the Bible. Just because you have a Bible does not mean you will be blessed by it.

To be blessed by God’s Word you must receive his Word into your life.

In James 1:21 he says, “‘Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains in wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.”‘ “Receive” is a hospitality word. It means “‘to welcome, come on in.”‘ To be blessed by God’s word, we must welcome it into our lives.

James says the word is implanted in you. The seed is planted, comes up and grows. In the Parable of the Sower, the seed sown fell on various kinds of soil. Some fell on good soil and was received.

We need the right attitude if we are to be blessed by the implanted word. James says we are to “‘be quick to hear”‘ (1:19). Be alert. He adds that we are to be “‘slow to speak.”‘ Sometimes we are quick to speak and slow to hear.

He adds that we are to be “‘slow to anger.”‘ A relaxed attitude increases how we receive God’s word. We don’t hear much if we are angry, upset, bitter or resentful.

When you listen, it lowers you blood pressure. When you speak, it raises your blood pressure.

James adds, “‘putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness.” Before you plant seed, you do some weeding and get rid of anything that would prevent the seed from taking root. Sin blocks your hearing and the word cannot get into your heart.

Finally, James says “‘in humility receive the word implanted.” Be humble, be yielded and willing to let God’s word change you.

James says we receive the word, reflect upon it and respond to it. He says we are not to merely listen but be doers of the word. When we respond to God’s word we are blessed by it. We are to be a living Bible for the world to see and hear.
