Magnolia’s Dollar General Store opened last week.
The grand opening ceremony is planned for 8 a.m. Saturday, but word about the new store has spread quickly in the small community.
Saturday, the parking lot was packed with vehicles and inside, the aisles were full of residents filling carts with food items, clothing or cleaning supplies.
Hazel Hodges was looking over every aisle, putting a few items in her cart, but mostly browsing in the well-lit store.
“It takes awhile to get through everything,” she said.
Long-time Magnolia resident Pauline Taylor said she was thrilled to have a new store in town as she seldom drove to Hodgenville. She also appreciates the convenience of the many items offered by the discount retailer.
“We just don’t have a lot (in Magnolia),” she said.
Other shoppers were taking advantage of a $5 online coupon good Saturday only.
The 9,026-square-feet store is located at 8755 New Jackson Highway near Magnolia Stop N Shop. It was constructed relatively quickly with zoning permits applied for and received in August and construction beginning in November.
Saturday’s grand opening will offer a $10 gift card to the first 50 shoppers.
Dollar General, based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., is the nation’s largest small-box discount retailer with  more than 8,800 stores in 35 states.
With the addition of the Magnolia store, Dollar General has three locations in LaRue County. The others are the long-established store in Hodgenville’s Lincoln Plaza and Upton.
New Haven and Sonora also have Dollar General Stores.
