 Small Business Smart Start Seminar

The University of Kentucky Small Business Development Center in Elizabethtown hosts a pre-business orientation seminar called “Smart Start – Business Basics” each month. Youth Service Center Advisory Council to meet

Parent Advisory Council to meet

The LaRue County Schools Parent Advisory Council will meet 6 p.m. Jan. 10 in the LaRue County High School library. The agenda includes discussion of 2011-12 Assessment Results, the Parent Involvement Evaluation/Survey for 2012-13 and input on the District Comprehensive Improvement Plan. Emancipation Proclamation observance

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park will host an “Emancipation Proclamation 150th Anniversary Observance” the weekend of Jan. 12-13. All activities are free.

Over the course of the weekend, children can participate in a scavenger-hunt activity to find various landmarks around the park. On Jan. 12, the park will host two speakers. At 1 p.m., Dr. Robert Dietle, head of the history department at Western Kentucky University, will speak. At 2 p.m., Jim Sayre will portray President Abraham Lincoln. Public Retirees to meet

Kentucky Public Retirees, Lincoln Trail Chapter, will meet 11:30 a.m. Jan. 14 at Ryan’s Family Steak House, 1034 Executive Dr., Elizabethtown. Doug Graham from Commonwealth Credit Union will speak about scams, especially those aimed at the elderly.

Blood drive in Hodgenville

A blood drive will be 3-8 p.m. Jan. 14 at Hodgenville Elementary School, 33 Eagle Lane, Hodgenville.

The Red Hill Cemetery Commission will meet 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at Hodgenville City Hall prior to the city council meeting.

A blood drive will be 3-7 p.m. Jan. 15 at First Baptist Church, 709 Main Street, Sonora.

Blood sugar testing

Free blood sugar testing will be offered 8:30-9:30 a.m. Jan. 15 at the Flaget Immediate Care Clinic on KY 245 in Bardstown (across from Buzick Lumber).

FREE CLASS: Managing your Meals  

Have you been told you have diabetes, need to lose weight or just need to learn how to eat healthy? The class “Managing your Meals”will be 1:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at Lincoln Trail District Health Department, 108 New Glendale Road, Elizabethtown. Meal plans will be developed by a registered dietitian. Registration is required by calling 270-769-1601, Ext. 1035. Class will be canceled if Hardin or LaRue county schools are closed for weather.

Vietnam Veterans of America to meet

Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1051, The Gold Vault Patriots, will meet 2 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Nolin RECC conference room, 411 Ring Road, Elizabethtown. ECTC hosts talks about stereotypes

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will host a talk by noted Kentucky author Rosie Moosnick at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in room 212 of the Regional Postsecondary Center. Cooper/Clayton stop smoking class

Cooper/Clayton stop smoking classes will begin 3:30-4:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the LaRue County Public Library, 201 S. Lincoln Blvd., Hodgenville, and last 12 weeks. Register by calling the LaRue County Health Department at 270-358-3844 to register. There is a $5 returnable book fee for the sessions and you will be required to purchase a nicotine replacement product after the second week. Sessions will be led by Diana Leathers, LaRue County community health educator.

County Extension Council Leadership and Awards Banquet

The LaRue County Extension Council Leadership and Awards Banquet is 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the LaRue County Extension Office. Meal is $6; South Fork Homemakers will cater. Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer will speak and the Bobby McDowell Award of Excellence will be presented. Call the Extension Office at 358-3401 to reserve a seat. Nominations for an individual or group for the annual Award of Excellence for leadership or community service must be turned in by Jan. 7.
