COLUMN: We are alive because of Christ

By George Smith

 “I’m alive!”

We can shout those words to the top of our lungs. We are alive because of Jesus Christ. He is the one who gives life, abundant and free.

The Apostle Paul says, “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ, even when we were dead in transgressions and sins…” (Ephesians 2:4).

Because of God’s great love, we who were dead are now alive. The apostle also said in Philippians chapter two: “Who being in very nature God … made himself nothing … and became obedient to death – even death on a cross.” (2:5)

Jesus left Heaven’s glory for our purpose – to seek and save the lost. Why did he do that? “For God so loved the world (people) that He gave His only begotten Son ….” (John 3:16)

We are made alive because of God’s great love. Jesus said, “The thief comes to steal and kill. I have come that you may have life ….” (John 10:10) Satan wants to kill and destroy, but Jesus gives life eternal.

W. B. Hinson was a preacher of a past generation. On one occasion he spoke of his own experience and said, “I remember a year ago when a doctor told me, ‘You have an illness from which you won’t recover.’”

Rev. Hinson said, “I walked outside the home where I live in Portland, Oregan, and I looked across to the mountains I love. I looked at the beautiful river that flows near my home. I looked at the trees that cover the landscape near where we live.”

Then Mr. Hinson said, “I looked up to the sky and said, ‘I may not see you many more times, but, mountain, I shall be alive when you are gone and level with the earth.’ I looked at the river and said, ‘I may not see you many more times but I will be alive, River, when you cease running.’  I looked upward and said, ‘Stars, I may not see you many more times, but I will be alive when you no longer shine.’”

We are alive now as Christians, and as Mr. Hinson said, we shall live forever.  And it’s all because of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, “I am the way … there is no other way.” (John 14:6) Paul says to the Ephesians in chapter two, “We were dead in transgressions and sin, but God is rich in mercy and sent His Son to die for us.”

When we trust Christ as our savior, we are made alive in Christ and will be alive forever and forever. Amen ... and amen.
