COLUMN: Make Christ your autopilot

Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it is springs the issue of life. Proverbs 4:23

Behind everything you do, there’s a thought. So if you want to change your life, you have to change your thinking.

Imagine riding in a speedboat with an automatic pilot set to go east. If you suddenly decide to head west, you’ve two possible options: one is to grab the wheel and force it to head in the opposite direction from where it’s programmed to go. By sheer willpower you could overcome the autopilot but you’d feel constant resistance. Your arms would eventually tire, you’d let go of the wheel and guess what? The boat would instantly head back east, the way its internally programmed to go.

That’s what happens when you try to change your life through willpower: “I’ll force myself to eat less, exercise more, quit being disorganized, etc.”

Yep, willpower can produce short-term change but it creates constant stress because you haven’t dealt with the root cause. The change doesn’t feel natural so eventually you give up, go off your diet, quit exercising and revert to your old patterns.

Thank God, there’s a better way. Change your autopilot – the way you think.

“Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” Romans 12:2

Change always starts in your mind. The way you think determines the way you feel and the way you feel determines the way you act.

But how can I change the way I think, you ask. By renewing your mind with God’s word. Try it, it works.
