COLUMN: America's hope rests with God

-A A +A

Things don’t sound so good in America. I doubt it will get any better without divine intervention. Recently I read an article about a typical day in America: 5,962 couples marry and 2,986 divorce; drunk drivers do $18 million worth of damage; 90 million cans of beer are consumed; 2,740 teenagers get pregnant; 63,288 cars crash killing 129 people; and 3,231 women have an abortion. Would you agree things don’t sound so good?
While I am being negative, let me mention other reasons for concern. The economy is one of our major concerns. Jobs, gas prices, housing market, national debt, the talk of a tax increase, and moral decay are concerns of many Americans.
Can we turn things around as a nation? Yes! The Psalmist said in 121:2, “I will lift my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.”
We must repent. God said in II Chronicles 7:14, “If my people who are called by my name will repent .. I will hear from heaven .. heal their land.”
Will Rogers said, “What our country needs is dirtier fingernails and cleaner minds.” In other words, repent of our uncleanness and go to work.
America was founded on Christian principles. I believe Christian people are the key to turning America around from the path of destruction we are headed down.  If people who claim Christ as their Savior don’t do what is right, then no one else in America will do what is right. Christians must set the example (I Corinthians 11:1).
Then I believe we are to pray (I Timothy 2:1-2). Governor Perry of Texas raised some eyebrows when he called for prayer for three days for rain for the state. He has also said America is in crisis and is planning an event next month in Reliant Stadium in which there will be prayer for our nation. America’s hope will be found on our knees.
America’s situation is not hopeless especially when the Lord is involved. There is only one person who can make things right and that is the Lord. The Psalmist in Psalm 72:17 says, “All nations will be blessed through Him.” God is the only one who can lift America out of her selfish and sinful ways.
