Hodgenville City Police are investigating a “big boom” that startled several individuals about 9:10 p.m. Jan. 2.

According to dispatch, three people from West Maple Avenue, Forresta Court and Kirkpatrick Avenue called 911 to report “a loud noise” or possible explosion.

Sgt. Marcus Jackson investigated and patrolled the area but did not find anything, said Police Chief Steve Johnson.

Stephanie Simpson said she heard the noise and thought it was an explosion.

“It shook the floor and nearly scared my dog to death,” she said. “I think everything in the house shook.”

Officers eventually found a spot on Shoffner Loop that is believed to be the source of the noise, Johnson said.

“There’s a place on the ground about 6-to-7 inches around where the grass is gone,” he said. “We don’t know what they used or who did it.”

“It could have been fireworks that didn’t go off right,” he added. “I noticed some being shot off later that week.”
