Volunteers will provide service Saturday at Harvestland Community Church

By Linda Ireland

A local church is responding to the tough economic times by hosting a free oil change and car wash for single mothers Saturday.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers from Harvestland Community Church on Lincoln Parkway will service vehicles for anyone who needs assistance. Inside the church, they’ll provide brunch and childcare while the car is being worked on.

Harvestland’s pastor Joe Jolly said the church held two oil change programs in 2008. In April, volunteers changed oil in 39 cars; 27 in September. The experience has given them insight into being “more efficient” in working on the cars and “more effective” in organizing the 40-or-so volunteers.

The project isn’t original with Harvestland. The group learned about the successful oil change ministry of Hillview Heights Church in Bowling Green. Hillview members offered assistance and advice in the beginning, he said.

Jolly credits the many businesses, individuals and other churches in the area for making the ministry possible. They’ve donated food, oil, money and supplies to the project.

Others have taken care of recycling used motor oil and cardboard.

“We’ve learned when you put a ministry effort like this together, God will provide in ways you couldn’t imagine,” Jolly said.

No one will be turned away, he added.

“Anyone who comes will be welcomed,” he said. “Any single mom, grandma or widow in the area ….”

Those who take advantage of the free service are under no obligation.

“It’s not about us trying to grow Harvestland,” Jolly said. “Just about being a blessing to the community.”

Volunteers from Union Christian Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Corbin will also assist. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, call Debbie Ragland at 324-3098 or Jolly at 325-2771 or 358-5418.
