Breaking Bread Bakery: Made from scratch

The sweet smell of baking bread, cakes, cookies and muffins has been wafting from a small shop on South Walters Street since February. The “Breaking Bread Bakery” (a not-so-subtle reference to the Bible) sells bread and other goods – all made from scratch.

For lunch, they also offer a bag lunch, which includes a sandwich (made with their own bread), chips, and a soda.

Fran Dowell of Magnolia is the owner. She bakes everything herself and says that since it opened, the bakery has been “pretty steady but not overwhelming.”

The bakery is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. You can find it directly across from the Hodgenville Post Office.

“Everybody that has been in has been very supportive, very nice, and I really appreciate all the support that we’ve gotten so far,” said Dowell.

Her menu varies daily, and though she doesn’t currently do any cake decorating, she will bake certain cakes upon request, and welcomes any other customer requests, including larger orders for groups.

“I’ve collected recipes all my life, I have a whole bookshelf of cookbooks, I make stuff up and I mix and match,” Dowell added.
