Book discussions forming

-A A +A

Lincolns Loft, Cozy Cafe are developing groups

By Linda Ireland

A pair of business owners are starting a book discussion group.

Becky Harrison of Lincolns Loft already has organized one book club that meets at the Lincoln Square bookstore at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays. The group discussed “Under the Banner of Heaven,” a true story about a Mormon murderer, by Jon Krakauer on Oct. 16.

Harrison and Gale Schmittou of Cozy Café are collaborating on starting a second group that will meet at the café on East Main Street.

Eight people are meeting in the first group – just about the right number, Harrison said.

“To add more to that group would take something away from it,” she said.

If one person hasn’t finished the book, the group discusses only the chapters everyone has read, she said. That way it doesn’t spoil the ending.

Books are selected by “drawing titles from a cup.”

“Everybody puts suggestions in and someone draws when we choose a new one,” Harrison said.

The bookstore also has hosted guest speakers, including local author Stephen Brown.

Schmittou said a date and time have not been set for the second group to meet.

“We’re waiting to see what the interest will be,” she said.

Snacks and coffee will be provided.

Members of the book group receive a 10 percent discount on the book being discussed at Lincolns Loft.

If you are interested in starting a book discussion group, call Harrison at 358-0124 or Schmittou at 358-8440.
