The LaRue County School Board voted Aug. 16 to advertise for sealed bids to sell the Magnolia School building and property.
The bid opening will be Nov. 11 and the bid will be awarded at the regular board meeting Nov. 15.
The elementary school closed when it and Buffalo Elementary School were consolidated to form Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in 2006.
BES, built in 1936, is being transformed into 19 apartments for the elderly by AU Associates of Lexington. According to project director Johan Graham, the interior framing is about 80 percent complete. Buffalo Apartments is expected to open by March 1.
MES is a newer building. While it could be developed into apartments, AU could not get historic tax credits on the project “as it has newer additions that are not 50 years old,” Graham said. “Also, its additions make it tough to list on the National Register of Historic Places as there is not really any architectural significance.”
