Bids for sale of Buffalo School to be opened today

A plan to convert the vacant Buffalo Elementary School into low-income housing for elderly residents was advanced Thursday at a special meeting of the LaRue County School Board.

AU Associates of Lexington has expressed interest in turning the building into apartments. The school board held a community forum in September to provide information and a tour of a similar project in Glasgow.

AU has developed five properties in Kentucky.

The purchase option on the school was approved 4-1 at Thursday’s meeting. Board member Denny Duggins voted no.

Superintendent Sam Sanders said the purchase option was approved “with a couple of stipulations.”

“AU Associates needed a purchase option for the paperwork they submit to Kentucky Housing Corporation; however, everything is contingent upon the sealed bid,” Sanders said in an e-mail. “We did reserve the right to reject any/all bids and also reserved the right to make the decision on what is best for the community.”

In other words, a high bid could be rejected if the board does not believe the project is suitable for the community.

A minimum bid of $60,000 is required, according to the legal ad in this week's print edition of The Herald News.

The sealed bid opening begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the district’s central office.
