Final sentencing set for Dec. 15 in LaRue Circuit Court

By Linda Ireland

William Mark Bell, 46, formerly of Mount Sherman, pleaded guilty to one count of complicity to commit second-degree criminal abuse in LaRue Circuit Court.

Recommended sentence was five years with credit for time served and dismissal of five other charges. He is to have no contact with his victim.

Bell already has served out his sentence, according to court records.

In 2005, a LaRue County jury found Bell guilty of five counts of sexual abuse and one count of sodomy for allegedly abusing a child. However, earlier this year, the verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court of Kentucky and sent back to trial court. The Supreme Court determined the “trial court sent the distinct message the verdict was taking too long” and permitted testimony that was irrelevant and improperly admitted.

Bell – who was serving a 25-year sentence in Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex – was transferred to LaRue County jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bond as he waited for a trial date. The bond was later lowered.

The trial was scheduled for Nov. 10, however, the plea agreement was reached before that date.

Final sentencing is set for Dec. 15.
