Lady Hawks defeat Caverna, Adair

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, LaRue County senior guard Valerie Whitlock became the 14th Lady Hawk to score more than 1,000 career points. Her performance helped the visiting Lady Hawks cruise by 18th District rival Caverna, 58-35.

On Saturday, freshman wing Ivy Brown gave the Hodgenville crowd a glimpse of who will likely be the 15th to reach the plateau. The Lady Hawks overcame a 12-point deficit to knock off the Adair County Lady Indians, 62-52.

Valerie Whitlock scored a team-high 14 points to help the Lady Hawks remain in contention for the No. 1 seed in the 18th District Tournament. The team's lone district loss was to Hart County on Dec. 10.

Valerie also added seven assists and three steals, while sister Lyndsay Whitlock had eight points and six rebounds.

"Finally," joked Valerie. "It is an honor to be a part of the 1,000 point club and I have my teammates to thank."

LaRue County's freshman duo of Brown and Allison Evans combined for 21 points and 14 rebounds against the Lady Colonels (4-12). Brown also contributed three assists and three steals.

Eighth-grader Alexis Brewer added eight points and three assists, while sophomores Haley Holt and Alisha Durbin combined for seven points.

The Lady Hawks, who were outscored 21-9 in the first quarter, showed resilience after a 3-pointer by junior guard Nancy Howell. Brewer also added three 3-pointers, while Brown chipped in with an additional triple.

Brewer finished with 18 points and a block, while the Whitlock sisters combined for 16 points. Howell and Holt contributed with 8 points.

The Lady Hawks shot 51 percent (21-41) from the field and went 15-33 from the free throw line as they moved to 7-0 at home.

"Everyone realized we were down and we needed to fix that," said Valerie. "We like to win now."

The wins also helped the Lady Hawks eclipse last season's win total of 14.
