BASKETBALL: Lady Hawks win 20th game in season

The LaRue County Lady Hawks ended January with a loss to the fourth-ranked Elizabethtown Lady Panthers (22-1) but started the first week of February with three convincing wins.

The Lady Hawks defeated Bullitt Central on Feb. 1 and went on to defeat Breckinridge County on Feb. 3. LaRue County capped the week with a victory over district rival Green County on Feb. 4.

Bullitt Central

Freshman wing Ivy Brown paced the Lady Hawks as they overpowered the visiting Lady Cougars, 67-37. Bullitt Central is 4-1 in the 24th district.

Brown finished with 18 points, 16 rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks. Sisters Lyndsay and Valerie Whitlock combined for 24 points, while freshman Allison Evans added 10 points. Alexis Brewer, Shana Zajdel and Nancy Howell combined for 15 points.

The Lady Hawks led after each quarter and held the Lady Cougars to single digits in the second and fourth quarters.

Breckinridge County

The Lady Hawks used a strong first-quarter performance to overwhelm the visiting Breckinridge County Lady Tigers. In the opening period, the Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Tigers, 25-11.

Brown chipped in 20 points, Brewer tallied 19 points, the Whitlocks combined for 10 points, Howell finished with 8 points and sophomore Haley Holt added 2 points.

The Lady Hawks were outscored in the second and third quarters but were able to hold off the Lady Tigers in the closing period. When the final horn sounded, the Lady Hawks were victorious with a score of 59-50.

Green County

LaRue County made history on Saturday as the Lady Hawks defeated the Green County Lady Dragons, 51-37.

The victory marked the first time the Lady Hawks have won 20 games since the 1994-95 season. The win also helped LaRue County seal the No. 1 seed in this month’s 18th District Tournament.

Brewer totaled 15 points, the Whitlock sisters combined for 15 points, Brown tallied 12 points, Howell finished with 8 points and Zajdel added one point.

The Lady Hawks overpowered Green County in the second half to finalize a regular-season sweep.
