BASKETBALL: Lady Hawks topple Taylor, Henderson

It took an extra period, but the LaRue County Lady Hawks continued on the path to tie the school record for wins.

On Feb. 11, the Lady Hawks defeated 5th Region rival Taylor County in an overtime road win, 52-46. On Feb. 12, LaRue County was victorious over the 2nd Region's Henderson County Lady Colonels, 50-48.

Taylor County

Alexis Brewer finished with 25 points and nine rebounds including two 3-pointers as the Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Cardinals 11-5 in overtime to reach 21 wins.

Brewer was aided by five other scorers: Ivy Brown, Lyndsay Whitlock, Valerie Whitlock, Nancy Howell and Haley Holt.

Brown added 11 points, Lyndsay Whitlock finished with 8 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, Valerie Whitlock tallied four points and five assists, Howell chipped in two points and Holt had two points.

The Lady Hawks finished with 17 field goals and went 16-for-26 (61.5 percent) from the free throw line. Taylor County is 3-3 in the 20th District and 9-6 in region play.

Henderson County

LaRue County knocked off perennial state tournament qualifier Henderson County, 50-48. The game was played at John Hardin High School as part of the Duke's Sporting Goods Valentine's Shootout.

The Lady Hawks trailed by two at the half, 20-18. However, they outscored the Lady Colonels by four in the second half to seal the victory and tie the school record for wins.

The 1994-95 team, which went 22-8 and finished as a region tournament semifinalist, shares the record with this season's roster.

Lyndsay Whitlock paced the Lady Hawks with 16 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Brewer chipped in 14 points, Brown finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Holt had two points, Howell added a point and Shana Zajdel had one point.

Brown also had four blocks. Valerie Whitlock added 5 assists.

The Lady Hawks finished with 12 field goals and went 24-for-37 from the free throw line.

Henderson County has appeared in the past six state tournaments.

UP NEXT: LaRue County, which played Monday night against Washington County, hosts Campbellsville at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
