Annual Bluegrass State Games kick off July 16 in Lexington

The annual Bluegrass State Games will be held on several dates: July 9-11, 16-18, 23-25 and July 30-Aug. 1.

The Bluegrass State Games is a non-profit program to promote amateur athletics.

The event kicks off July 16 with “Celebration of Athletes.” The free event will be held at Applebee’s Park in Lexington. The first 2,000 registered Games’ participants who sign up to attend Celebration of Athletes will receive a free ticket to Legends vs. Hickory Crawdads game. Family and friends can purchase tickets at the discounted rate of $6 each and will be able to sit together as a group.

Participants also will receive a free meal and T-shirt.

Thirty sports are available to participants including 5K run/walk, archery, baseball, basketball, bowling, chess, cornhole, cycling, disc golf, martial arts, flag football, sailing and wrestling.

In 2008, more than 15,000 athletes competed.

Sports events are held in different locations including Fayette, Woodford, Scott, Clark, Madison and Franklin Counties.

Volunteers are needed with set-up, tear-down, scoring, registration and tabulating results.
