The LaRue County Fair is an excellent opportunity for youth to showcase their talents. Numerous 4-H classes are offered including arts and crafts, photography, foods, houseplants, vegetables, crops, electric, woodworking, entomology, honey, forestry, geology, sewing, knitting, crocheting, breads, dairy foods, food preservation and home environment.
A complete list of 4-H classes is included in the fair catalog. Stop by the Extension Service office if you need a copy of the catalog or if you have questions about entry requirements.
Ribbons and premiums will be awarded to all entries. Blue ribbon class champions in eligible classes will advance to the State Fair. The Danish system will be used for judging, with all exhibits receiving a blue, red or white ribbon, based on the quality of the exhibit.
Entries will be taken at the fairgrounds between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. July 26. Exhibitors must be between the ages of 9 and 18 as of Jan. 1, 2010, and a member of LaRue County 4-H. All exhibits must have been completed after the 2009 County Fair. 4-H Cloverbuds, ages 5 to 8, also may enter their projects for exhibit at the fair, however they will not be eligible to advance to the State Fair. Cloverbuds will receive a ribbon for each entry as well as premiums.
There is no limit to the number of exhibits a 4-Her may enter. However, no article may be entered in two classes. Also, an exhibitor may not enter two units of the same project in the same year. For example, an exhibitor cannot enter the first year foods and the second year foods; or second year electric and third year electric in the same year. Food exhibits must use the exact recipe provided in the 4-H project book. To obtain project books, contact the Extension Service at 358-3401.
Exhibits are to be picked up between 10 a.m. and noon July 31. The Extension Service office staff and volunteers are not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items.
Those 4-H exhibits that are eligible to advance to the Kentucky State Fair must be brought to the Extension Service office by 8:30 a.m. Aug. 16 to be taken to Louisville to the State Fair for judging.
While you’re attending the fair next week, don’t forget to stop by and purchase a bag of cotton candy from 4-H. Cotton candy sells for only $2 a bag. All proceeds help support the youth of LaRue County and the local 4-H program.
4-H members, parents and volunteers are needed to help make and sell cotton candy during the fair. Call the Extension Office at 358-3401 if you would like to volunteer to help any evening during the fair.
